Jack Michael was approved for ordination to the Christian ministry on Thursday by the Department of Church and Ministry of the Eastern Ohio Association of the UCC!  Before Jack can be ordained though, he must have a specific call to ministry.  He is involved in conversations with a couple of possibilities in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota where he now lives.  When he receives a call to ministry, he plans to have his service of ordination here at Fairlawn West.

Habitat for Humanity Sunday will be Sept 9th.  On that Sunday we will have a special offering for the Habitat house we are helping to build this year and possibly the family receiving the house will be present with us for the 9:30 am service.  Please, include in your budget this special offering which we share in with some other churches in our area to provide for a specific house each year for a family that is in need of decent housing.  Thanks to all who have helped with the building this year of the house.

There are two church settings in Akron in neighborhoods where folks have low economic resources, who have invited us to help them feed people in their neighborhoods.

Lunch On Us at Miller Ave

This is hosted at Miller Ave UCC in the south Akron Summit Lake
neigborhood.  It is between south Main Street and Summit Lake.  Area UCC churches host on the 3 & 4 Saturdays of the month what is called Lunch on Us.  We have been invited by Bath UCC to join them when they host the meal on Saturday, September 22 at noon.  If you would like to help, reply to David Loar deloar@yahoo.com or contact  contact Dom Pica 330- 666-2666.

Sunday Supper at 1st Presbyterian Church

This congregation is on the east side of Akron on east Market Street near Buchtel Ave, just east of City Hospital.  They are just beginning a Sunday evening meal program for their neighborhood which has a number of low-income folks near by.  Westminster Presbyterian Church on West Exchange Street has invited us to join them in hosting a monthly Sunday night meal on the 3rd Sunday of the month.  If you are interested in this, contact David Loar.

These are real opportunities for us to work with brothers and sisters in Christ here in Akron to help other brothers and sisters who have major needs.  We know from our work at the Williard Food Pantry that the number of people needing food assistance is growing in our community!

The Tuesday night discipling group has decided to help the Willard Food Pantry this next year (September 2007-August 2008) by donating the following items that are given out when individuals and families ask for them.  Please bring your item(s) with you during the 1st & 2nd weeks of the month and place them in the box in the front lobby.  Thank you very much for helping us with our goal of helping Willard Food Pantry!

Nursery volunteers are needed for the 9:30 am service because we’ve been blessed with lots of infants and toddlers in recent years. We have two openings for the 1st week of the month. Please consider if God is pulling on your heart to assist the parents of these youngest members by volunteering in the nursery. Contact Kathy Sasowsky at 330-670-0454 or 0455 to volunteer or with questions.

Todd Eisinger of our church is preparing to swim in the Special Olympics in China later this month.  Todd has asked us to pray for him.  You are invited to be part of a prayer team for Todd as he continues his final preparations with his mother Debbie for his competition, the travel and the experience.  If you hear God calling you to be on Todd's prayer team, mark the Sunday Connection Card or contact the Fairlawn West office  864-2179, office@fairlawnwest.org
